program, trails, and self-guided auto tour. In July 1864,
during a surprising eleventh hour attempt, rallying Confederate
forces attempted an invasion of Washington, D.C., which would
have greatly prolonged, if not altered, the course of the
Civil War. The duration of the battle enabled General Ulysses
S. Grant to reinforce lines around Washington and prevent
the Confederate invasion.
